One of the new build NHS PFI hospitals, the Royal Worcester was developed on a green-field site adjoining existing hospital buildings. Navigation for patients, visitors and staff was an important issue and we were tasked with designing a system that would encompass both external and internal areas. We created visual themes for each of the four levels in the building, using images drawn from the surrounding countryside, then established a system of naming for wards and clinics to tie in with these images. A modular sign system was specified to provide directional information and a system of large scale image panels created visual landmarks.
