Highlands & Islands Enterprise

Cowan House

We were commissioned to design a dual language (English and Gaelic) wayfinding system for the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) headquarters building. As the departmental structure of the organisation is subject to frequent change it was necessary for us to develop an easily-updated modular system.

Gaelic can be difficult to integrate into signs and directories as line lengths usually run much longer than the equivalent English text. In this instance we balanced legibility with practicality and used a modest size reduction to allow the Gaelic to occupy similar profile sizes while still ensuring DDA compliance.

Separate teams and workgroups were identified within open plan spaces using a system of suspended sign panels, each of which could be quickly and easily relocated when necessary.
