Clarity
Of course environmental graphics need to be legible, compelling and placed in appropriate positions. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Our wayfinding systems work on a far more fundamental level, bringing a framework of logic, clarity and sense of purpose to a building or public space.
Our systems are based on the theory of ‘progressive disclosure’, that is, giving people exactly the information they need (no more, no less) at the time that they need it. This requires clear, rational thinking, as well as an appreciation of spatial relationships and human psychology.
To help people navigate a complex space, we first ‘deconstruct’ a building, not only in terms of its layout, but how it is used, and the way people naturally move around it. Then we can assess how best to direct people from one area to another, and make most effective use of the space.
Wayfinding demands an unusual blend of science, psychology and design. These elements need to be carefully balanced to achieve a clear, coherent system. We use three guiding principles as the building blocks of all our work.
